"Just like real Jedi - only with cardboard" [Nov. 24th, 2007|09:48 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

I witnessed a decidedly odd event while in Toronto recently - and came back with the pictures to prove it. It was organized by newmindspace, the wacky folks that have created such events as downtown pillow fights and subway parties. I guess these things used to be called happenings. I suppose now they might be termed performance art - or something.

In any event, the group's plan was to stage a huge lightsaber fight, but they couldn't afford real lightsabers so they acquired 1,600 cardboard tubes, painted them with fluorescent paint and projected ultraviolet light on to the battle scene. A concept which only partially worked - the ultraviolet light hardly shone brightly on the sidewalk outside the Royal Ontario Museum - too much light pollution by far - but at least it attracted a large crowd of the curious and the committed. And the odd Star Wars character or two. Or three.

The group promotes itself as an urban playground movement. Which I have to say seems apt as, even putting my advancing years aside, the whole thing seemed veering towards the childish. But sort of fun in an anarchistic kind of way, I suppose, and that's the point.

Besides, how often do you get a chace to see R2D2 on one of Toronto's main thoroughfares. And Princess Leia. And half a dozen Luke Skywalkers.

As for the lightsaber battle itself, folks really got in to it. I mean they were bashing each other on the head - perfect strangers - with those cardboard tubes like there was no tomorrow. I wasn't sure how best to capture the action, as I'm still experimenting with the settings on my little Lumix LX2. But I got a few shots in which capture the height of this weird battle in all its craziness.

You know me too well. Yes, I NEVER post in the evening, yet alone at weekends. But I have a backlog of images and stories - this one today is already a week old - plus I have a busy week ahead and may not be able to post much (again).

That looks like so much fun, even if it do seem a little lame. I think part of the performance art thing is to make people a little uncomfortable and put them in unusual settings and allow them to act out. I would love to do something like that. What's more fun is just bumping into a piece while it's happening and trying to figure out what the hell is going on!

Did you do any bashing, for just clicking? The first pic behind the cut is fun!

You are right. Part of the quite large crowd wouldn't have had a clue what was going on. (Such an odd thing to stumble upon too.) Even knowing the score, as I did, the whole thing was definitely bizarre.

Oh those violent Canadians, hitting each other with cardboard light-sabers. Makes me want to immigrate.

Well, I guess if you feel like you need to bash someone, doing it with a cardboard tube isn't such a bad idea. Probably therapeutic, even . .

Maybe world leaders should try this approach - just get togther for a little cardboard lightsaber battle instead of anything more serious . .

The day it happens, I'll run for office, because I want a crack at a few of those people.

I was so going to be there. Even arrived 20 mins early, with my camera.

And then I got cold, and walked home.

Glad someone got pictures of it!

You missed a not-bad photo op. But it was a very cold night, and I'm guessing that they started late. (I arrived way late and it was in full swing.)

First time ever, I think, for Saturday night posting. Perhaps I'll do one tonight and all, and really throw you off balance.

I was ecxp[erimenting with the "night scenery" setting on my camera. It actually kind of works for this stuff (see the last two shots) because it captures both a sharp image through flash (I think) and then allows for capturing movement through an add-on longer exposure. Of course your psycho camera would add yet another interesting dimension . .

Cool!

If that had been staged in the US, it would have turned ugly and required police intervention at the end. I like you Canadians ...

That last photo is sheer magic. What created the white Yoda-like image in the center? Took my breath away. Hope you are keeping warm. Hugs all around. et

'Tis like Yoda, but it's really a trrick of the light. The "Jedi" were right on top of a spotlight in that last poicture and their movements back and forth during a long exposure created some inetersting effects . .

Heh, that looked like fun! That's one of the things I like about big cities that smaller places can never have. Despite the university here and a lot of weirdos of all stripes, that [points up] is not something you'd EVER see in Ft. Collins.

And that's a very impressive R2D2 they had there. It reminds me of those droid-building conventions where everyone brings their own R2 unit and tries to out-geek everyone else. :)

Yep we don't get this kind of thing in Nanookville either. More's the pity. And as for R2D2, you can probably guess he was remote controlled, and made all the requisite beeps and squeaks . .
