More snow [Jan. 17th, 2011|10:05 am]

Right now we are dealing with just under a foot of snow and extreme cold. This morning it is -22C, about -8F. That is bordering on the really uncomfortable to be out in, and I’m sensing the dogs, who all like a bit of snow, find it a bit much too.

I think the two bassets like it least. Being short in stature, they have to sort of burrow their way around d. They don’t stay out long.

Meanwhile, I can’t say enough how just plain tickled pink I am that Glee’s Chris Colfer won a Golden Globe last night, almost overshadowing Glee’s own Golden Globe later that night. Good that he took the opportunity to mention the bullying issue too.

I’ve always maintained that Kurt’s stance on bullying beats the well-intentioned but ultimately less efective It Gets Better campaign by a country mile. Choosing between the messages of each, Kurts’s “screw that kids” wins hands down, in my book.

I can't help but think that Glee is preaching to the choir somewhat...

Do you mean the Kurt story line? Could be, but the show has a large audience of young people which includes the same demographic that the It Gets Better campaign is trying to reach.

Maybe its different in the US/Canada but it's demographic here is GAY with a capital G and a side order of rainbow flags and glitter balls. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with shows dealing with homophobic bullying, but I suspect it isn't the kind of show to be watched by teens who are questioning their sexuality and worried about bullying.

I think it probably has a wider demographic here.

Interestingly, both Chris Colfer and his bully (see clip below) have made IGB videos.

There is quite a bit of back story to this. Here's a sample:

Absolutely agreed on the "screw that, kids" line. And as well-intentioned as the "it gets better" campaign is, I have to say that it's getting a little tiresome by now.

One of my issues with the campaign is that it was a bit of a flash in the pan.

I liked Chris's look of total surprise that he won the award. It seemed genuine.

I think it WAS a surprise. I suspect the guy from Modern Family was expected to win (he's also very good too.)

Chris's stock went up even higher in my accounting. He is such a class act. Glee may have lost a tiny bit of sparkle for me this year, but Chris hasn't, and the version of "Baby, it's cold out side that he sings in the Christmas episode is THE version for me from now on.

As for the cold, it has been hovering around 0 degrees F here at night. Way too cold for me in this ancient old house with not an iota of insulation and rattling old windows.

January is more than half over, Spring is coming.

I agree. I mean what's not to like about Kurt/Chris. He seems in RL almost like an extension of his on-screen character, and I like that.

As for the cold, I cant wauit for spring.

i liked the genuine shock on his face (although he certainly thanked all the right people once he got on stage) and the enthusiastic response he received from the others in the cast.

great snow on the nose shot. : )

I don't think he was the favourite, so the shock was genuine. Very well deseved though.

I'd not heard of the "it gets better" campaign over here in Finland, so I went and looked it up. I knew from articles I've read that high school in the US is often not a positive experience (someone, I think it was Paul Graham writing about what being a nerd in school was like, described it as prison for children, in order to keep them of the streets of the suburbs during daylight hours.)

I'm sure the intentions of the "it gets better" campaign were good and perhaps it has had a positive effect on some gay school kids' lives, but personally I find it rather depressing to read that "this will pass" is seen as a way of dealing with bullies. When you're fourteen or fifteen, three or four years feels like a long long time, and I can't see how being told to wait a while could bring much cheer.

It feels a bit like giving up on tackling the root of the problem. Which is, of course, to punish the bullies by making them sing show tunes in just their underpants in front of school assembly.

You've hit the nail on the head about the It Gets Better Campaign. The words used in it are often comforting and empoowering for gay youth, but the basic strategy is suggests - a passive approach akin to "just suck it up for a while" - just leaves me cold.

I wrote a more detailed analayis, including a comparison with how Glee addresses bullying - in my other journal over on PositiveLite. It's here: http://positivelite.com/content/blog/contributors/green-acres/item/young-and-gay-dan-savage-vs-glee-s-chris-colfer?category_id=23#comments

I've missed LJ, and especially you and the lads. Now that I can't really read it at work it's so hard to really take the time to read everything. I always love your pics, of course. Especially pics like this.
